Urip Sehat Initiative grows from the understanding that health, food, and the environment are inseparable in village life. Rooted in local wisdom and guided by liberatory learning, the program walks with women and youth to revive plant-based food traditions, restore water and sanitation practices, manage waste collectively, and nurture community-led responses to the nurthering the mother earth.
Urip Sehat Initiative
We aim to reclaim community wellbeing by reconnecting health, food systems, and environmental care through locally rooted knowledge and collective action.
Since its inception in 2022, the Urip Sehat Initiative has fostered community awareness and collective responsibility through environmental outreach and action. The program began with our first coastal outreach and beach clean-up, where we engaged local communities in discussions on waste management and healthy living practices while restoring the shoreline together.
Located less than one kilometer from Cemoro Sewu Beach in Pemalang, Central Java, our basecamp allows us to maintain a close relationship with the coastal ecosystem and the communities who depend on it. What began as a single action has grown into a monthly collective movement. Each regular clean-up is not only an effort to care for the environment, but also a space for shared learning, community dialogue, and the strengthening of ecological stewardship rooted in everyday practice.
Our school collaboration program began in July 2023 as part of our commitment to nurturing environmental awareness among younger generations. Working closely with teachers, we build partnerships that allow climate education to grow naturally within school environments. Supported by our volunteers and networks—many of whom are educators themselves—we are able to design and implement joint extracurricular activities that make learning about climate action engaging and accessible.
Through interactive sessions, campaigns, and student-led initiatives, we encourage young people to understand their role in caring for the environment and their communities. Our collaborations have reached senior high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools, creating spaces where environmental responsibility is cultivated from an early age and strengthened through collective learning.
