Sunday Reading is a community-based learning movement that creates joyful and inclusive spaces for children in rural areas to access knowledge and develop essential life skills. Born from the belief that learning should be close to children’s everyday lives, the program transforms open public spaces such as beaches, hillsides, and village fields into welcoming environments where reading, curiosity, and creativity can flourish.
We aims to nurture a culture of literacy and lifelong learning among rural children while expanding their access to knowledge beyond the limitations of formal schooling. We believe that books are bridges to imagination, confidence, and critical thinking, and that learning spaces should be accessible, playful, and rooted in the community.
Each week, Sunday Reading organizes Sunday learning sessions supported by a mobile public library that brings curated books directly to children. Through storytelling, reading circles, creative activities, and interactive discussions, children are encouraged to explore ideas freely and develop their communication skills. By bringing learning into open communal spaces, Sundary Reading not only improves access to books but also reclaims public spaces as shared classrooms where children can grow together. Since its establishment, the program has been implemented in Pemalang (Central Java) and Kendari (Southeast Sulawesi), reaching diverse rural communities and fostering a love of reading in supportive, community-centered environments.
